The Pelotas Birth Cohort Studies
The Pelotas Birth Cohort Studies are four of the largest and longest-running longitudinal studies in the Global South, including over 20,000 participants and their families and encompassing over four decades of data collection. The first study aimed to recruit all children born in the city of Pelotas, southern Brazil in 1982. Of 6,011 eligible children, 5,914 (98%) were included and they have been repeatedly assessed through childhood into adulthood. Subsequent studies included children born in Pelotas in 1993, 2004, and 2015, based on similar recruitment and follow-up methods, providing rich opportunities for both life-course research and investigations of time trends over a period when Brazil experienced major social, economic, health, and political change.
The Pelotas Birth Cohort Studies include a rich array of biopsychosocial data from interviews, psychological tests, observational assessments, physical exams, biological samples, and linked records, which are described in summary “cohort profiles” (1-10). The studies are coordinated by a team of researchers at the Postgraduate Program in Epidemiology, Federal University of Pelotas, where DOVE is based. Researchers at DOVE investigate the causes and consequences of violence and related topics across the Pelotas cohorts, and key findings are summarised on this website and in many scientific publications.
