DOVE Researcher Named Finalist for the Early Childhood Science Award

Eduardo Viegas da Silva from the Human Development and Violence Research Centre (DOVE) Advances in the Doctorate Category

The coalition Núcleo Ciência Pela Infância (NCPI) has announced that DOVE Postdoctoral researcher Eduardo Viegas da Silva, affiliated with the Post-Graduate Programme in Epidemiology at the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel), has been named one of the finalists for the ‘Prêmio Ciência pela Primeira Infância’ (Early Childhood Science Award). Established in 2022, this award aims to recognise and promote research that enhances the well-being of Brazilian children up to the age of 6, focusing on ethnic-racial, regional and disciplinary diversity.

This year’s edition saw over 200 studies submitted and evaluated based on diversity, applicability, intersectoral collaboration, equity and teamwork criteria. Fifteen research projects were selected for the final round, including Eduardo’s work in the Doctorate category.

The study showed that the Brazilian home visiting programme “Primeira Infância Melhor”, implemented in Rio Grande do Sul since 2003, improved the socio-cognitive development of vulnerable children when the intervention started during the gestational period, pointing out the importance of linking families to PIM during pregnancy. The evaluation study has been highlighted for its potential contributions to public policies concerning early childhood, showcasing the relevance and social impact of research conducted at UFPel and DOVE.

This recognition underscores the impact of scientific research in improving effective practices and policies that benefit early childhood.
