The complete recordings and individual videos of the seminar “Child Development and Violence Prevention: Evidence and Public Policy Pathways in Brazil” are now publicly available. Held on 23 and 24 June 2026 at PUCRS, in Porto Alegre, the event brought together researchers, policymakers and civil society to discuss investment in childhood as a central strategy for tackling violence across the life course.
Promoted by the Human Development and Violence Research Centre (DOVE/UFPel), the Instituto Cidade Segura (ICS) and PAHO/WHO, in collaboration with PUCRS, the seminar is a product of DOVE’s work as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Evidence-Based Violence Prevention Across the Life Course. An article published on the PAHO/WHO website highlights how these discussions are helping to shape Brazil’s contributions to the Second Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, taking place in November 2026.
What you will find in the videos
The programme combined scientific evidence and practical application over two days with complementary aims:
- Day 1 — Scientific evidence and structural challenges: brings together diagnoses of the country’s challenges and analyses of currently available interventions. Akemi Kamimura, PAHO/WHO national officer in Brazil, presented updates to the INSPIRE technical package for preventing violence against children and adolescents. DOVE’s director, Joseph Murray, examined the impact of adversity on life trajectories in the national context, while DOVE researcher Eduardo Viegas da Silva presented evaluations of parenting programmes aimed at promoting child development and reducing violence. Maíra (Lila) Teixeira, of the Centre for the Study of Violence at the University of São Paulo (NEV/USP), discussed social markers, racism and xenophobia in contemporary childhood. Dandara Ramos, of UFBA and the Scientific Committee of the Núcleo Ciência pela Infância (NCPI), addressed how early childhood is being brought onto the public security agenda. The day also featured contributions from IPEA, PUCRS, ICS, the Ministry of Health and the Brazilian Coalition to End Violence Against Children and Adolescents.
- Day 2 — Public management and territorial implementation: dedicated to hearing from the managers who deliver these policies across all three levels of government. Local experiences were presented from the municipalities of Pelotas/RS (the Pacto Pelotas pela Paz, with Aline Crochemore), Lajeado/RS (with Mayor Glaúcia Schumacher) and Santo Antônio do Descoberto/GO. At federal and state level, presentations included contributions from the Secretariat of Primary Health Care (SAPS/MS), the National Secretariat for the Rights of Children and Adolescents (SNDCA/MDHC) and the Rio Grande do Sul State Health Secretariat (SES/RS).
This articulation among universities, governments, international organizations, and civil society created a space for diversity and integration that reaches well beyond the event itself, with discussions set to drive new research and practical action by DOVE in partnership with these institutions.
